Letter from the
Outreach/Community Development

Dear Seniors and Friends:

We are always working to find creative ways to fund the Meals on Wheels Program. We do fundraisers to bring in desperately needed funds to continue providing meals to the frail, elderly of this county.

As you know, the government only partially funds the Meals on Wheels program and we must raise additional funds to keep it going. As a matter of fact, the government has cut our funding by approximately 15,000 meals in the past year. We are expecting another cut in the next year. Due to ongoing large financial cuts to our meal delivery program by the government, we are experiencing serious, heartbreaking decisions. With our current funds, we are unable to supply meals to all the frail, elderly seniors in the community contacting us for service.

There are indefinite waiting lists and it is painful to have to tell needy seniors that they have to wait for food. That cut in funding, along with a decrease in donations, has caused the indefinite waiting list that we now have. In an effort to bring in needed funds, this summer we did a large mailing inviting people to “Pass a Dish” to needy seniors. By sending a donation for $50, meals for two weeks can be provided to a needy senior; $100 can provide meals for a month. We are hoping that, by making our needs known, people living in the community who can help will do so. If you have family or friends who might be in a position to help us with this fundraiser, please have them contact our office at (810) 632-2155.
