Identity Theft


This is not a quick or an easy topic to explain, or deal with once it occurs.

Identity Theft can be described as the unlawful use of your identifying information (name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, Bank Account numbers, credit card numbers, etc.) to obtain and use your credit, your money, obtain goods and services, open fraudulent bank/credit accounts and/or to facilitate other criminal activity.

Statistics indicate that it takes a victim on the average of six months to two years and an average of $1,400.00 to recover from Identity theft.

Can you completely prevent identity theft from occurring? Probably not, especially if someone is determined to commit the crime. You can however take steps to reduce your risks of becoming a victim of identity theft.

The Livingston County Sheriff Department is committed to reducing crime and the fear of crime. Members of the Sheriff Department recognize that the victims of identity theft usually feel confused, overwhelmed and upset. We hope these suggestions assist and provide you direction in the prevention of identity theft and assist in ways to restore your credit in the event that you become a victim.
