Household Hazardous Waste

Welcome to Livingston County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center web site! Here you will learn about the types of items we accept and do not accept,  alternatives that are less toxic than hazardous materials, when and where the collection events are held, and how you can help us reduce waste in Livingston County.

This project was made possible through a grant by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Clean Michigan Initiative. Several partners helped to establish this project by pledging to donate time, personnel, funding, promotion, and education, including Livingston County Board of Commissioners, Livingston County Drain Commissioners Office, Livingston County Department of Public Health, City of Brighton, Deerfield Township, Green Oak Township, Tyrone Township, Howell Township, Unadilla Township, Hamburg Township, City of Howell, MSU Extension, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program.

The best way to reduce waste is to buy only what you need and to use up what you buy for its intended purpose – or give the material to someone that can use it. Looking for less toxic alternatives? Click here to find out some tried and true recipes for cleaning compounds, bug killers, and home improvement products.
Collections are typically held in the spring, summer and fall. Always set up an appointment prior to bringing waste to the collection center. Click here for a schedule of upcoming collection events and how to schedule an individual appointment.
Are you a Do-It-Yourselfer? If so, recycle your used oil at a local retailer or quick lube facility. Click here for a listing of locations to recycle used motor oil.

Wondering if we will take what you found in your basement? Click here for a list of acceptable and unacceptable items.
Need Directions? Click here for a map to the collection center.
Got Paint? We take oil based paint only. Click here for instructions for disposing of paint of all sorts.
There are battery collection containers around the county where you can drop off used household batteries.
