Voter Registration

· The last day to register before an election is on the 30th day preceding the election.

· It is not necessary to re-register for each election unless you have moved and/or changed your name.

· You may register to vote at any Secretary of State Branch Office, the Livingston County Clerk’s Office, or a city or township clerk’s office.

· Your voter registration will not be valid until accepted by the local city or township clerk’s office. Please contact your city or township clerk if you do not receive a voter identification card in the mail within 4 weeks after registering.

· Michigan election law requires that the same address be used for voter registration and driver’s license purposes.

Polling Locations

· The polling place, or precinct, is where you go to cast your ballot on the day of the election.

· Your voter identification card contains the polling place location and the precinct number for school district elections and for regular elections. If you are unsure about the name of the jurisdiction in which you are registered, please contact the Livingston County Clerk’s office.

· If you are unsure about whether you are registered or the precinct number or polling place location in which you are registered, please contact the city, township, or village clerk’s office, or your local school district’s administration office for regular and special school elections.

Voting Procedures

· When you arrive at your polling place location, a precinct inspector will ask that you complete an Application to Vote form to verify your name and address as shown on the precinct poll list.

· The type of ballot being used on the day of the election will depend upon the type of voting method (optical scan or paper ballot) used by your local clerk and/or school election official.

· The precinct inspectors will provide instructions on how to mark the ballot.

Voter Qualifications

· You must be a U.S. citizen.

· You must be a resident of the State of Michigan and must be at least a 30-day resident of your city or township by the day of the election.

· You must be at least 18 years of age by the day of the election.

Absentee Voting Procedure

· You may request an absent voter ballot by letter or postal card from your city, township, or village clerk. Applications for absent voter ballots are also available from your city, township, or village clerk.

· You may contact your local school district’s administration office to request an absent voter ballot for a regular or special school election.

· You may apply for an absent voter ballot if: you expect to be absent from the community in which you are registered for the entire time the polls are open on the day of the election; or you are physically unable to attend the polls without the assistance of another; or you cannot attend the polls because of your religious beliefs; or you have been appointed a precinct inspector outside of your community; or you are 60 years of age or older; or you are in jail awaiting arraignment.

· When requesting an absent voter ballot, please provide the following information: the date of the election, your name, the address where you are registered to vote, the reason that you are requesting an absent voter ballot, your signature, date of your request, and the address where you wish to have your ballot mailed. Absent voter ballots must be sent to your registered address unless you are hospitalized, institutionalized, or at an address outside of your community.

· The deadline for applying to receive an absent voter ballot by mail is 2 p.m. on the Saturday prior to the election.

· The deadline for applying to vote an absent voter ballot in person at your local clerk’s office is 4 p.m. on the Monday prior to the election.

Absentee Voting Restriction

· A person who registers to vote in a jurisdiction in the State of Michigan by mail must vote in person on the day of the election if that person has not previously voted in person in that jurisdiction.

Exceptions: a person entitled to vote by absentee ballot under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizen’s Absentee Voting Act, or a person who has a handicap, as defined in Section 103 of the Michigan Handicappers’ Civil Rights Act, or a person who is 60 years of age or older. The restriction does not apply if the applicant personally delivers the mail voter registration application form to the local clerk’s office.
