Foster Adoptive and Kinship Services Workgroup

Workgroup Goal: To increase and retain licensed family foster homes by providing focused outreach recruitment strategies, timely and effective training, and creative, meaningful supports that will meet the diverse individual, developmental, emotional, and cultural needs of foster children and the foster parents caring for them.

The FAKS workgroup has established the following Objectives for FY 2009 and will implement the associated activities aimed at successful achievement of the activities.

Recruitment Objectives and Activities:

Obj:  To recruit a sufficient number of potential homes interested in
becoming licensed to provide foster or relative care for children
from the abuse/neglect system so that we ensure all out of
home placements of children are in licensed home.

Obj:  To have at the ready a sufficient variety of licensed homes to
ensure quality matches of children to the home at initial
placement to prevent multiple subsequent placements.

Obj:  To increase the number of licensed family foster homes that
will accept adolescents, sibling groups, and children with
        disabilities.

Obj:  To identify families willing to participate in case planning for the
children in their care and that have the flexibility to participate in
        concurrent planning.

Obj:  To identify families willing to provide training and education to
        birth families.

  • For the beginning of the fiscal year, our emphasis will be to
orient, train and license homes that presently have relative
placements in order to meet new DHS mandates.

When the relative home licenses are sufficiently caught up, we will refocus efforts to normal recruitment strategies, such as:

  • Respond to all licensing inquiries in a timely manner.

  • Post information on the Livingston DHS webpage about the
    FAKS hotline.

  • Seek opportunities to give presentations to local groups including civic organizations schools, and members of the faith community.

  • Work with local media outlets(eg: newspaper, radio, etc:) to publicize need for foster and adoptive parents.

  • Solicit input from existing foster families on potential resources.
