Workgroup Objectives:
Prevention Goal/Objectives
1. Increase public awareness of substance abuse issues and addiction
in the county.
Strategies/Activities:
Explore a community survey in 2007/2008 to determine what the community
knows and needs more information about.
Support Community Intervention Process being piloted by the Livingston
Educational Service Agency which provides training for teams comprised of
schools, health, and law enforcement to recognize the signs of abuse and
learn new intervention strategies and referral processes.
Establish on-going community based education series and disseminate
information to community regarding substance abuse issues and trends.
Educate the local Chambers of Commerce, civic clubs, medical community,
and local government officials about issues and trends of substance abuse
and the impact on the greater community.
2. Increase availability of recreational and positive
activities for youth.
Strategies/Activities:
Survey or conduct focus groups with youth to determine what activities
youth want offered.
Determine what activities are currently available as well as accessibility
to activities (e.g. cost, location, etc.).
Utilize local groups of youth and parents, faith-based groups, community
education in all of the schools, and local recreational authorities to
partner on project.
3. Decrease parental involvement in the availability of
substances to youth.
Strategies/Activities:
Using an on-line process, survey parents in all five school districts to
determine what information they need.
Develop partnerships with parent groups on this issue.
